Federal treasurer WAYNE SWAN says any gambling reforms must take into consideration
the huge reliance on gambling by state governments.

The prime minister has promised to work with anti-pokies campaigners who want to forbid
ATMs in gambling areas.

Mr SWAN has told Network Ten they have to get the balance right between social responsibility
on the one hand and economic responsibility on the other.

He says KEVIN RUDDs' promise to sit down and talk to MPs about their concerns is a
very sensible way to approach the issue.



HMAS Voyager (CANBERRA)

The federal government has again pledged to try to resolve any outstanding compensation
claims arising from the HMAS Voyager disaster.

Today is the 44th anniversary of the nation's worst peacetime military tragedy .. in
which 82 people lost their lives.

One civilian .. 14 officers and 67 sailors died when the ship collided with HMAS Melbourne
during a training exercise.

34 damages claims by HMAS Melbourne crew are still before the courts.



Mitsubishi (ADELAIDE)

Mitsubishi workers will be back on the job tomorrow .. building their first cars for
the company after learning their jobs will be axed in a matter of weeks.

Last Tuesday Mitsubishi announced 930 workers will lose their jobs .. as a result of
plans to close assembly operations in Adelaide.

Some staff are expected to retire on the payouts .. others will be looking to retrain
and find new positions.



Burke Grill (PERTH)

West Australian Premier ALAN CARPENTER has yet again been confronted by the ghost of
BRIAN BURKE .. with new claims emerging the disgraced former premier is still talking
to government ministers.

Mr BURKE's business partner and former WA minister .. JULIAN GRILL .. has told the
Nine Network he and Mr BURKE are still in regular contact with WA Labor MPs and ministers.

The pair have been at the centre of a series of scandals over their influence .. after
evidence emerged in 2006 and 2007 during a long-running series of Corruption and Crime
Commission hearings.



US Vote (SEATTLE)

BARACK OBAMA has won a clean sweep over rival HILLARY CLINTON in three Democratic presidential
nominating contests.

OBAMA has won big in Washington state .. Nebraska and Louisiana.

US media report OBAMA outpaced the former first lady by margins of roughly 2-to-1 ..

significantly boosting his campaign to become the country's first black president.

On the Republican side .. MIKE HUCKABEE has won a boost for his flagging campaign by
taking Kansas.

Washington state and Louisiana are too close to call.



Kenya (CHEPKIOYO)

Kenya's opposition leader has demanded the president resign and new elections be held
.. ending hope of a political settlement to end weeks of violence.

RAILA ODINGA .. who's accused President MWAI KIBAKI of stealing the December 27 election
.. has made the demand in front of his supporters gathered for the funeral of a slain
opposition politician.

It's a sharp turnaround from comments he made two days earlier in Nairobi .. where
he said his party was willing to give and take.



Indon Stampede (JAKARTA)

10 people have been killed in a stampede at a rock concert in Indonesia's West Java province.

Local police say hundreds of fans had packed a hall to watch a performance by a little
known punk rock band in the city of Bandung when the stampede began last night.

Most of the dead are teenagers.

15 concert organisers are being questioned by detectives over the incident .. Indonesia
deadliest stampede at a concert in recent years.



UK Camden (LONDON)

Firefighters say a blaze that ripped through London's trendy Camden Market .. destroying
shops .. bars and homes .. took six hours to bring under control.

100 firefighters tackled the blaze .. which forced police to evacuate bars and clubs
packed with young revellers as the flames engulfed market storage areas and shops.

Police say parts of the area are expected to be closed for the next three or four days.

Traditional dragon dancers .. stilt walkers in flowing red gowns and a giant bamboo

in the Chinese new year.

AFL Injuries (MELBOURNE)

Essendon skipper MATTHEW LLOYD is in doubt for his club's opening NAB Cup match against
Brisbane on Saturday night.

LLOYD sat out the Bombers' intra-club practice match last night with a hamstring complaint.

Coach MATTHEW KNIGHTS says he'll be monitored throughout the week .. before a decision
is made on whether he plays against the Lions at Carrara.

Meanwhile West Coast star midfielder DANIEL KERR could miss the club's entire pre-season
campaign .. after tearing his hamstring in the Eagles' intra-club match at Subiaco Oval
last night.

But coach JOHN WORSFOLD expects him to be back to full fitness by the start of the
home and away season .. if not earlier.



Tennis Davis Aust (SYDNEY)

Davis Cup debutant ALUN JONES and doubles specialist PAUL HANLEY will represent Australia
in the dead rubber singles in the Asia-Oceania zone Group One tie in Taiwan.

LLEYTON HEWITT and CHRIS GUCCIONE .. who won the singles rubbers on the opening day
.. have been rested after Australia clinched the tie in the doubles yesterday.

South African-born JONES will be first on court followed by HANLEY.



Squash Swedish (SYDNEY)

Englishman ADRIAN GRANT has upset Canberra's STEWART BOSWELL in the quarter-finals
of the Swedish Open squash tournament in Linkoping.

GRANT .. the sixth seed .. beat fourth-seeded BOSWELL 9-11 11-3 11-9 11-6.

BOSWELL had been hoping to make it two Australian wins in a row following DAVID PALMER'S
victory in this tournament last year.



Triathlon Aust (GEELONG)

World champion MIRINDA CARFRAE has continued her strong form in half-Ironman triathlons
.. winning today's inaugural Ironman 70.3 race at Geelong.

CARFRAE was in the top five after the 1.9-kilometre swim and broke away on the 90-kilometre
bike ride .. holding on during the 21.1-kilometre run to win in four hours, 24 minutes
and 27 seconds.

Victorian LEON GRIFFIN upset a strong men's field to win in 3:56:49.
