Fed: PM puts national security at top of 2004 agenda

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has put national security at the head of his government's
agenda for 2004 -- an election year.

In his New Year message, Mr HOWARD says the capture of toppled Iraqi dictator SADDAM
HUSSEIN and Libya's decision to give up its weapons of mass destruction have provided
a positive end to 2003.

He says there can be not let up in the struggle against international terrorism in 2004.

He says the government's goals in the New Year will continue to be maintain national
security, economic strength and social stability for Australia.

The prime minister's message began with the earthquake victims of Iran whom he says
have suffered one of the worst natural disasters of modern times.

His message ends with a wish of success for STEVE WAUGH as he leads Australia for the
last time into the fourth cricket test against India on Friday.
